A little girl sets out to meet her father for the first time. The man has been killed by someone who has sinister plans.
Haven't seen this one ... but if it covers the same ground as The Eyes Have It it's almost certainly a winner.
1.2 A Dog's Ransom (6 episodes) tx 07.03.78 – 23.03.78 Starring Zena Walker Brian Stirner Benjamin Whitrow Writer John Bowen based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith Produced by Jacqueline Davis Director Donald McWhinnie
After abducting a dog the kidnapper asks for a ridiculous sum of money. The police get involved, and subsequently things get out of control.
Bowen looked back at his own work in an article in The Listener:

I was myself asked, by Thames Television, to make a six-part serial out of Patricia Highsmith's A Dog's Ransom, and did so. The script itself was well achieved - well acted, well directed; I was fond of it. But it didn't work as it would have done if I had made a two-hour play or film, because Ms Highsmith's method is very slowly to tighten a screw, while I, to conform with the form - six 24.5-minute episodes, with a break in the middle of each - had to manufacture a series of false climaxes all through the first half of the work; none of the tightening could carry over from Tuesday to Thursday to Tuesday again.

When Mr Skipling plays a cassette which was accidentally left by a casual acquaintance on board a train he finds that he is designed to be a murder victim.
Excellent conspiracy thriller (cf. Frantic etc) with a first-class, absorbing performance by McKellen, reminiscent of (and preceding) David McCallum in The Corvini Inheritance. The chap on his scooter, complete with helmet, conspicuous raincoat and odd social skills, is quite a sight. Is he paranoid or not? You're kept on the edge of your seat until the end!
2.4 Fear Of God (4 episodes: A Question of Gravity/ ?/ The Music Room/ Bang!) tx 26.02.80 – 06.03.80 Starring Bryan Marshall (Paul Marriott) Madeline Church (Nicola Clay) Alun Armstrong (Trahearne) Michael Watkins (Cyril) Garrick Hagon (Walters) Robert Austin (Stapleton) Madeline Hinde (Francesca Thornton) Michael Sheard (Col. Quite good, but not as powerful as it could have been. Derry Quinn wrote a supernatural Paul Temple episode (The Quick and the Dead) which covers similar territory. Another conspiracy thriller by Kennedy Martin (cf. The Visiting Fireman, Edge of Darkness etc) who evidently tried to breathe new life into a (sadly) short-lived cinematic genre.

2.5 High Tide (4 episodes) tx 11.03.80 – 20.03.80 Starring Ian McShane (Curtis) Kika Markham Terence Rigby Toby Salaman Michael McKevitt Wendy Morgan John Bird Writer Andrew Brown Casting Joyce Gallie Music Richard Hartley Photography Peter Jessop Operator John Mills Costumes Graham Williams Designer Judy Steele Art Director John White Editor Michael Hunt Dubbing Mixer Ken Scrivener Director Colin Bucksey

2.6 The Circe Complex (6 episodes) tx 25.03.80 – 10.04.80 Starring Alan David Michael Deeks Beth Morris Writer David Hopkins based on a novel by Desmond Corey Producer Brenda Ennis Director Robert D. Cardona
Val Foreman's husband Tom knows where 400,000 pounds worth of stolen jewels are stashed away – but how can he be freed from prison?

And now for something completely familiar ... the Who Killed Lamb syndrome!

The Chelsea Murders tx 30.12.81 Starring Dave King David Gant (Frank) Writer Jonathan Hales based on a novel by Lionel Davidson Director Derek Bennett
A Detective Inspector investigates a series of murders.
(I know what you’re thinking – but that’s all I could find.)

DEAD OF NIGHT (BBC)

EPISODE GUIDE
Script Editor Louis Marks Producer Innes Lloyd

1.1 The Exorcism tx 05.11.72 (rpt 26.12.73) Starring Anna Cropper Sylvia Kay Clive Swift Edward Petherbridge Music Herbert Chappell Designer Judy Steele Writer/Director Don Taylor
Two couples experience a night of terror in a countryhouse.
UAAAAHH! Right up there with the best Thriller episodes and a landmark piece of television!
Note that this is done without flashbacks and without constructing a parallel universe. The budget is nil, sure, but the whole burden is put successfully on dialogue and acting. The scene in which Petherbridge spits is a triumph. There are impressive make up and sets at the end though.
If people don't like the ending that's fair. But does that make the rest of the play worthless? Not sure the critiscism which was brought forward hits the nail on the head: There seems to be an confusion of recipients in the real and the fictional world.

Nick Cooper (http://www.625.org.uk) provided the following details on Don Taylor (re-printed in Cornell/Day/Topping, Guinness Book of British Television, pp 415-6):

Born into a solid working-class background, Taylor studied at Oxford and joined the BBC in 1960. At the time, the old theatre-based practice of producers also directing and editing plays still held sway and it was in this multi-hatted capacity that – after episodes of Scotland Yard and an Arthur Swinson drama-documentary, The Road to Carey Street - Taylor produced N. J. Crisp's The Dark Man (1960) and David Turner's The Train Set (1961). Both appealed to Taylors left wing sensibilities, the first being a fable about racial prejudice set in a taxi firm, the latter about a factory owner desperate to buy a toy for his trainspotter son. Taylor than began to develop a group of writers he would direct almost exclusively over the next four years, Crisp, Turner, Hugh Whitemore and, especially, David Mercer, starting with Where the Difference Begins (1961). Sydney Newman's restructuring of the BBC drama department in 1963 was anathema to Taylor, and following artistic differences with Newman and James MacTaggart over two plays he directed under the new system (George Target's Workshop Limits and Whitemore's The Full Charter, both 1963, he was moved off new plays. As an olive branch, Newman offered Taylor the initial producership of Doctor Who, but the latter declined, directed Whitemore's Dan, Dan the Charity Man, and Mercer's And Did Those Feet? (both 1965) as a freelance and was then (he alleges in his book Days of Vision) effectively blacklisted from BBC drama. Moving back to the theatre, with occasional work for the BBC arts features department, he returned to drama in 1972 to direct his own play The Exorcism for Dead of Night. The Roses of Eyam (1973) and Dad (1976) followed, whilst Taylor also worked for ATV, directing Visitors and The Person Reponsible by his wife, Ellen Dryden, in 1974, and two plays in Nigel Kneale's Beasts series in 1976. Since then, with the exception of existing works such as Arthur Miller's The Crucible and Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen of Verona, all of Taylor's television work has been from his own scripts, including When the Actors Come, Flayed (both 1978), In Hiding (1980), and A Last Visitor for Mr Hugh Peter (1981). He has also directed his own translations of Sophocles in a 1986 BBC trilogy.
1.2 Return Flight tx 12.11.72 (rpt 24.02.74) Starring Peter Barkworth Dennis Lill Artro Morris Karin McCarthy Diana Fairfax Writer Robert Holmes Designer Paul Allen Senior Cameraman Frank Wilkins Director Rodney Bennett
Radio Times summary: When Captain Rolph reports a plane on a collision course to Ground Control they can find no trace of the mystery intruder. Did he imagine it, or was there an aircraft?
1.3 Bedtime tx 19.11.72 Starring Sarah Badel Neil Stacy Jim Smilie Jaqueline Pierce Terrence Hardiman Yutte Stensgard Writer Hugh Whitemore Designer John Wood Director Simon Langton
Radio Times summary: Victorian brass bedsteads are all the rage these days. Lorna and Geoffrey are delighted when they find one at a bargain price ... From the writer/director team that gave us Rebecca. Wotta loss.
1.4 Death Cancels All Debts tx 26.11.72 starring Sebastian Shaw Nora Swinburne David Baron Katya Wyeth Writer Peter Draper Designer Gerry Scott Senior Cameraman Rodney Taylor Director Brian Farnham
Radio Times summary: Powys Jubb, a world-famous writer, wakes up every morning at 4.20 when his bedroom clock stops ticking. He feels that at 4.20 one morning he will die.
Familiar-sounding stuff, reminiscent of a Basil Copper's short story "The Janissaries of Emilion" and almost definitely worth seeing. Alas ...
1.5 Smith tx 03.12.72 Starring John Castle (Michael) Stacey Tendeter (Anne) Gwen Taylor (Tessa) Peter Gilmore (Photographer) Writer Dorothy Allison Designer Walter Miller Senior Cameraman Harry Barclay Director Robert Knights
Radio Times summary: His name was Smith. It sounded so ordinary yet his crimes horrified and appalled the England of his day. When Jane Hornby, a journalist, looks into the story, she finds the past lives on in the present.
Sounds great, but there doesn't seem to be a Jane Hornby among the roles of the play. (Maybe Anne Hornby is more to the point.)
1.6 Two In The Morning tx 10.12.72 starring Peter Jeffrey Ralph Nossek John Nettleton Donald Douglas Judy Matheson Andrea Allan Writer Leo Lehman Designer Archie Clark Director Paul Annett
Radio Times summary: There are many legends from different parts of the world which tell of a man who meets his own double. The accounts vary wildly, but all agree on one thing ... the outcome can only be evil ...
1.7 A Woman Sobbing tx 17.12.72 Starring Anna Massey Ronald Hines Julian Holloway Tommy Boyle Writer John Bowen Film Cameraman Peter Sargent Designer David McKenzie Film Editor Mal Shaw-Jones Director Paul Ciappessoni
Radio Times summary: Jane and Frank Pullar have recently moved to a house in Sussex so that the children can grow up away from the dirt and rush of London. Soon jean starts hearing sounds at night from the attic. But there is no one there and only she can hear them.
Another top-notch entry – lots of it is timeless and still topical today. There is an intertextual reference to GASLIGHT.
